For months our client sought classroom materials about the Israel-Gaza conflict his son’s teacher publicly stated would be used in his son’s classroom, fearing the material would be wildly imbalanced and inaccurate. Throughout that time our client politely but repeatedly asked first the teacher, then the curricular specialist, then the principal – they all refused.
California Education statutes require school districts to provide students’ parents with the materials being taught in their children’s classrooms. There is also a California law that demands school districts turn over public records—including curriculum—when requested. THE DEBORAH PROJECT went to court so that the Berkeley Unified School District would be ordered to comply with the laws they have repeatedly flouted.
